Responses to adopted social statement on human sexuality and ministry policy recommendations 2009-2010

These records comprise a series that documents some of the reactions to the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly's approval of the proposed social statement on human sexuality and the accompanying ministry policy recommendations. The Churchwide Assembly met in Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 17-23, 2009. These records are primarily electronic correspondence sent to Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson or the ELCA in general at info@elca.org or they were sent to the Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality at faithfuljourney@elca.org. Correspondence regarding the social statement and ministry policy recommendations began arriving on August 14, 2009, prior to any decisions reached by the assembly. The volume of correspondence increased greatly in the days immediately after the statement and recommendations were adopted. It continued to be received regarding this topic through January 2010. Most of this correspondence includes the initial email from the sender and an ELCA general reply tailored to whichever side of the issue the correspondents identified themselves. There was a specific reply for those satisfied with the decisions made at the assembly and there was a specific reply for those dissatisfied with the decisions made at the assembly. There are a few letters with questions about how one could obtain a copy of the adopted statement and ministry policy recommendations, but the bulk of this correspondence is reactions to the adoption of the statement and recommendations. There is one folder of typewritten correspondence, news articles, and listerv posts that are reactions to the actions of the assembly, but the bulk of this series is electronic mail. While the stock replies are the same for each satisfied or dissatisfied sender, what makes this an interesting collection is sender's initial message. These messages will give a sense of some of the immediate reaction to the decisions that were reached.
